कविता अपना जनम ख़ुद तय करती है / The poem Chooses Its Own Birth

Year ago I wrote an essay 'कविता अपना जनम ख़ुद तय करती है ' (The poem Chooses Its Own Birth) for an anthology of essays  "Living in Language" ed. Erica Hesketh(2024) published by Poetry Translation Centre London, launched in the Writers Centre Norwich this year.

I am thankful for this opportunity as I rarely write prose. It allowed me to write an outline of my own roots of poetry and the processes within.

May be a graphic of text

I thank  'Raagdelhi' https://raagdelhi.com/news/poem-decides for publishing the essay in the original text. Essay was translated from Hindi by Sarabjeet Garcha.

नई कविताएँ - मोहन राणा । New Poems - Mohan Rana

Three New Poems in Translation.

These three poems were translated from Hindi by Lucy Rosenstein and the Irish poet Bernard O’Donoghue.

खग्रास

हमने की कोशिश अँधेरे को मिटाने की
हो गए मंत्रमुग्ध चमकते बल्बों की चौंधियाहट से
कि नहीं दिखता कुछ भी उस चमकते अँधेरे में...

From 'Eclipse':

'Trying to overcome the dark,
we become dazzled by shining bulbs.
Nothing is visible in this glowing darkness,'

नक़्शानवीस

पंक्तियों के बीच अनुपस्थित हो
तुम एक ख़ामोश पहचान
जैसे भटकते बादलों में अनुपस्थित बारिश,
तुम अनुपस्थित हो जीवन के हर रिक्त स्थान में...

From 'The Cartographer':

'Between the lines it’s you,
absent, but a silent presence
just as the rain is absent in the passing clouds.'

बावली धुन

रात थी सुबह हो गई
करवटों में भी नहीं मिली कोई जगह
यह ग़लत पतों की यात्रा है मेरे दोस्त...

From 'An Obsessive Tune':

'Night passed and the morning came,
though, tossing and turning, I got nowhere.
A journey, dear friend, to wrong places.'

'तीसरा पहर' कविता का नेपाली अनुवाद । Translation of poem 'Teesara Pahar' [After Midnight] in Nepali

{English Translation}

After Midnight

I saw the stars far off -
as far as I from them:
in this moment I saw them -
in moments of the twinkling past.
In the boundless depths of darkness,
these hours
hunt the morning through the night.

And I can't make up my mind:
am I living this life for the first time?
Or repeating it, forgetting as I live
the first moment of breath every time?

Does the fish too drink water?
Does the sun feel the heat?
Does the light see the dark?
Does the rain too get wet?
Do dreams ask questions about sleep as I do?

I walked a long, long way
and when I saw, I saw the stars close by.
Today it rained all day long and the words were washed away
from your face.
[Translation from Hindi by Lucy Rosenstein & Bernard O’Donoghue]
