The Translator : Nothing is Translated in Love and War

Nothing is Translated in Love and War

Translation of Mohan Rana’s poem, Prem Aur Yuddh Mein Anuvaadak Nahin Hote

Nothing is Translated in Love and War

Nothing is translated in love and war—
between unseen interlocutors,
doubles of our names,
shadows of each other,
like that elusive silhouette—
anonymous images
in a gallery of unclaimed mirrors.

Like you and I—
once strangers,
lifelong seekers
of an unmarked address,
that became the nomad’s shelter.

Then, suddenly, in the tossing
of night into day,
a singular name,
etched in the creases of memory,
emerges
against the half-lit walls
of thought.

Face to face,
we become two pronouns—
uttered in a single line—
in need of no frontiers, no fences,
or punctuation, because
none wants to decipher
the grammar of this language.

Having lost our names,
we find ourselves—again—
you and I—strangers,
nursing the same old fear,
alone in a world
teeming with voices.

In prisons, where friends
and foes serve pain—
translators are essential.
In courts, where truth and fiction
haggle for justice—
words must be measured,
chessboard-style,
played in coins.

Between doctor and patient,
in sterile hospitals,
amid the commerce of cures,
where life and death
are advertised like wares—
insurance, in many tongues,
tries to translate
what “life” means.

There are no sentries
in love and war—
no interpreters
between tyrants and the tyrannized
in the chronicles of history.
Words mutate,
rituals re-narrated,
a dirge sung in unison.

In love and war,
there are no witnesses
no proofs—
only perspectives
that seek to give
and hide
meaning from each other.
Each shoulder bears
its own archive,
boxed and sealed
in the memory-marketplace.

Under every cloud,
a translator lingers
like an umbrella—
writing silent monologues,
confessions
already recorded by time
on a stone adrift in water,
its smile fading
in the river’s midstream.

Nothing is narrated
in love and war—
only jesters abide,
indispensably in the wings.

Love leaves no sign,
but it alters—forever—
the view from a single window
of what once felt like your own.

Nothing is translated
in love and war.

Four Clubs, Three Aces and a Joker — Poem by Mohan Rana

FOUR CLUBS, THREE ACES AND A JOKER

Even before I shuffle the cards, you know
four clubs, three aces and one joker
appear to tell me with their oblique smile
they have already revealed
what I have, what I do not have in my hands
Yet I keep hoping
this game of cards is being played according to the rules

The trains that were to arrive today,
their time had long elapsed
Every passenger who was to arrive departed long back
Perhaps I turned up late
or perhaps the trains to my destination were not there now
All I heard now was a long-drawn coarse crooning
that continued to resonate in the shadows of the ridges of my words
The weaver of thoughts
was there no more in the radiance of that lingering murk

Yet I keep playing this game of cards amidst your absence,
A wind that shivers the skin coat betwixt a startling sunshine
tests my shrivelled shadow
Thinking to myself, this body will not remain with me in future,
the one I stare at for long, standing in one corner of the station
this delay perhaps is there in some time table

The poem Chooses Its Own Birth

Year ago I wrote an essay 'कविता अपना जनम ख़ुद तय करती है ' (The poem Chooses Its Own Birth) for an anthology of essays  "Living in Language" ed. Erica Hesketh(2024) published by Poetry Translation Centre London, launched in the Writers Centre Norwich this year.

I am thankful for this opportunity as I rarely write prose. It allowed me to write an outline of my own roots of poetry and the processes within.

May be a graphic of text

I thank  'Raagdelhi' https://raagdelhi.com/news/poem-decides for publishing the essay in the original text. Essay was translated from Hindi by Sarabjeet Garcha.

The Cormorant < Mohan Rana>

The Cormorant

Soon a new season will start
If there is spring in this latitude
I'll change my clothes
And stroll around guided by maps
Trees will come into leaf
Birds fly back from near and far
I hope there will be no news
Of a new war
I'll clear my throat to say the half-spoken but fall silent
May this spring be so long that the memory of
Autumn does not return to the solitude of words

Spring is getting shorter each year
Each year grows shorter in spring,
So short that sometimes
Only two seasons seem to be left now -
Good and bad
Joy and sorrow
Love and fear
You and I
May spring and autumn be divided between us
And the withering rain remain all year long

I thought, let's catch the fragrance of a taste coming from the kitchen
On my sleeve and write it down
Wishing to understand something in the quiet back yard
Searching in a tiny space for a corner to stand,
Time may come soon
To divide the world
All has to be forgotten in order to remember
Alone with the inventory of necessary baggage,
Life requires not just breath
But flames of love in mind's shadows -
The hand which breaks the fall

Small change in the abacus adding the loan of drudgery
Nervous in the decrepit present, feeling my dry cheeks,
I haven't yet seen the past
From inside the mirror
When I leap in its luminous unknown
I lose one thing to gain another

Acacia

Acacia

On waking each body assumes my guise
Pressures of everyday worldliness abound all around me
As I begin the quest for the real
Wearing yet another mask of mine
I have hung my trophies on the wall quite systematically
I have found many missing ones lending them my identity
Having occasionally posted their “gone missing” notices
Kept their memories hanging on Acacia branches, flip flops
And my socks, both were stung by nettles of the prickly clime
Now let it end, at every sigh I am more replete with the humid air
In the inertia of walking to the corner of earth, I slowly become
A winged creature void of flight, thrust into a glassy alcove
Who, with the changing directions of light
Keeps revolving on a clamp for endless revolutions
The gathering of dust on my trophies is a triumph in itself
While trying to lose the coming ones
While trying to forget written words
Dejected my falsehood was not so real
Despite my daily identifications of the invisible Aeyaar*

Robin / Photo-Mohan Rana

===========================================

Missing from language

Torus
Just imagine universe itself; the vibration, the energy and the frequency!
Counting there is a deeper philosophical truth in this if what is missing from language!
